RESERVE OF MANU 8D/7N
Manú National Park is a biosphere reserve located in Madre de Dios and Paucartambo, Cusco. Before becoming an area protected by the Peruvian government, the Manú National Park was conserved thanks to its inaccessibility. The park remains fairly inaccessible by road to this day. In 1977, UNESCO recognised it as a Biosphere Reserve and in 1987, it was pronounced a World Heritage Site
Manu Reserve are situated in the remote south-eastern region of Peru, protects some of the earth’s most important wildlands. Those uniques biospheres covers an area of more than 5 million acres.
The Manu Biosphere Reserve is one of the most pristine areas of rainforest in the Amazon and consists of the entire drainage basin of the Manu River. There are very few human settlements in the park, and there is no hunting or fishing. Tourism is strictly controlled and visitors are only allowed into the park if accompanied by a registered guide and with a registered tour operator.
The Reserve of Manu is one of the largest conservations units on Earth, encompassing the complete drainage of the Manu River. The reserve is inhabited by at least four different native groups, mostly nomadic, they subsist on some form of root crop agriculture, along riverbanks and lakes, on fishing at the Manu River and hunting inside the forest..
The park protects several ecological zones ranging from as low as 150 meters above sea level in parts of the Amazon Basin to Puna grassland at altitudes of 4200 meters. Because of this topographical range, it has one of highest levels of biodiversity of any park in the world. Overall, more than 15,000 species of plants are found in Manú, and up to 250 varieties of trees have been found in a single hectare. The reserve is a destination for birdwatchers from all over the world, as it is home to over 1000 species of birds

We continue to the picturesque town of Paucartambo, and on toward the Acjanacu Pass, which marks the beginning of the Cultural Zone of Manu
Biosphere Reserve. Here a thick cloak of clouds provides perpetual humidity and makes an ideal habitat for epiphytic plants such as bromiliads. This varied and fascinating world is home of the Cock of the Rock, The Spectacled Bear, orchids, tree ferns, mosses and lichens. This cloud forest exists between 2000 and 3000 meters above sea level and at least 50 % of the plant species found here are endemic to this region. We camp our first night in this high forest. -

We cross the river to walk an 8 km. trail to the oxbow lake Otorongo, here a strategically located observation tower rises 15 meters above the lake and the jungle floor, giving us more chances to observe wildlife such as the Giant otter (Pteronura brasiliensis), which is an endangered species. Slowly, the macaws come down to the clay wall to feed. We need a lot of patience and silence on the catamaran so as not to disturb them as they eat the clay. Around mid morning we board our canoe to return to the airstrip at Boca Manu. Those who return to Cusco by plane can catch their flight.
